Elms are (along with apple trees and yews) probably the trees to which I have the strongest emotional bond. In recent years, the European elm population has been hit hard by disease, graphiosis. Now the situation has calmed down a bit... I plant elms wherever and whenever I can. Their wood is just as easy to work with as walnut. However, elm wood is even denser, more flexible, and stronger. Its colors tend to be warmer than walnut. Sometimes elm cores can reach a dark, reddish-brown color. This wood is sometimes called "European mahogany." A very noble material.
