The wood is treated with a mixture of vegetable oils certified for contact with food. The handle resists water, moisture, and liquids common in the household. The handle can be wiped with a damp cloth or rinsed briefly with water and then allowed to dry. 
The handle is glued to the ceramic case with glue resistant to water and temperature (hot water is not a problem) and in addition, the "carpentry" joint is secured with wooden pegs.
