The wood is treated with a mixture of vegetable oils certified for contact with food. The handle resists water, moisture, and liquids common in the household. The hand can be wiped with a damp cloth or rinsed briefly with water and then allowed to dry. 
The handle is glued to the ceramic case with a glue resistant to water and temperature (hot water is not a problem) and in addition, the "carpentry" joint is secured with wooden pegs.
